Educator Resources & Training

  • Project WET Workshop
    With fun, hands-on activities, you’ll learn about Tennessee’s water resources and how to help your students become environmental stewards. We will be exploring the Lytle Creek behind Cannonsburg for some hands-on exploration! So be prepared to laugh, learn and lead.

    These sessions are for all public and private school teachers, non-formal educators, park rangers, nature center and museum staff, teachers-in-training and community leaders are welcome to join.

    Curriculum Materials Included for each participant a.k.a. FREE STUFF!!:
    • 500-page Project WET Curriculum & Activity Guide with over 85 water-related activities for K-12th grade lessons in a variety of formats: whole body, group, discovery science, laboratory investigation, local and global issues

  • Growing Up Wild
    Growing Up WILD is an early childhood education program that builds on a child’s sense of wonder about nature. The activities invite adults and children to experience the out of doors “one toe at a time” and have a wonderful time doing so!  Head Start Domains and NAEYC Standards guided the development of all Activity Lessons.Go home with your copy of Growing Up WILD, many ideas to put into practice in  the classroom, and other goodies. Coffee, tea and healthy snacks provided.

Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts of all levels can experience interactive programs at the Discovery Center. Our programs help scouts learn about science, art and nature while working towards the completion of badge requirements. Discovery Center programs include scheduled programs, super science nights, museum rentals, Discovery Center patch and Camp-Ins.

Scheduled Programs
T
he Discovery Center Girl Scout programs are designed to complete all of the requirements for the Try-its, Badges, and Interest Projects listed below. We look forward to offering additional new programs after November 1st to meet the latest requirements. Please check our web site after November 1 to see the new offerings.

Fees:
   • 
Minimum payment: $42/troop, for up to 7 girls, $6 per additional girl
   •  One (1) adult free for every 7 girls.
   •  Troops must have a 1:7 adult to child ratio
   •  $6 for each additional adult

Reservations: Call (615) 890-2300 for reservations or questions about the programs.

Program FAQ:
   • 
Each program lasts from 1 to 1 ½ hours and will be lead by a Discovery Center Staff member.
   •  Programs are available during museum hours.
   •  Materials will be provided. You may schedule up to 2 programs per day.
   •  Cost is per program. (1 program= $42 minimum, 2 programs= minimum of $84)
   •  Girls are welcomed to explore the museum with their leaders following the program.
   •  Except for the Discovery Center patch, we do not supply the actual Badges or Try-it patches. Badges and
       patches must be purchased at the council office by the troop leaders.

SUPER SCIENCE NIGHTS!

Level: Brownies and Juniors

Fees: $10 per girl, 1 adult free for every 7 girls.
Troops must have a 1:7 adult to child ratio. $10 for each additional adult.

  • Junior Super Science Night
    February 24, 2012  •  6:00-8:30 p.m.
    Junior Super Science Night: We are planning a super fun evening just for Junior Girl Scouts! Girls can rotate through stations to progress towards badge completion. The girls can also enjoy free time in the museum.

Please note: Badges must be purchased at the council office by the troop leaders. Cost does not include the cost of the badge.


Girl scout Museum Rentals

Level: All

Fees: $25/hour

Reservations: Reservations Required. Please call (615) 890-2300.

Need more space to complete a badge or try it for your troop? Not enough room in your kitchen for a cooking badge? Call to reserve a room at the Discovery Center for only $25 an hour. We have a full service kitchen and 3 additional classrooms available. Our kitchen is equipped with utensils, a microwave, 3 ovens, a 4 eye cook top, 5 sinks, refrigerator, freezer, several tables, and a large counter for easy demonstration and preparation. Our three additional rooms vary in size and amenities. Please call (615) 890-2300 for additional information.

All rooms are available for reservations Monday through Friday from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Please bring your own materials. Rental includes the room and table set up only. Staff, consumable materials, actual
badges or try its, and clean up are not provided.
 


The Discovery Center Patch

Grade Levels: All

Fees: $6 per girl; $6 per adult. Troops must have a 1:7 adult to child ratio

Come explore the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring! See the wetlands, visit animals, slide down our 2 story slide, have fun with hands-on experiments! We have designed our own Discovery Center patch for you to add to your Girl Scout patches. Your troop can complete the self guided tour and earn our Discovery Center Patch at the end.The patch is included in the price. Programs available during regular museum hours.

Please note: This is the only actual patch available at the Discovery Center.


CAmp-Ins!

Grade Levels: All

Fees: $450 minimum for up to 16 girls and 4 adults. Troops must have a 1:8 adult to child ratio
$25 for each additional child; $25 for each additional adult

Reservations: Reservations Required. Please call (615) 890-2300.

A fun alternative to a camp out! Come spend the night at the Discovery Center! Arrive on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and stay over night until 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

Cost includes:
• A fun-filled night of activities in the museum
• A program designed to complete the requirements for one badge or try-it
• Activities to complete our very own Discovery Center Patch and the patch itself
• 2 staff members
• Pizza Dinner, evening snack, and a continental breakfast for all participants prepared by our staff
